UCC Single Module Certificate Course
The course exposes students to both the theory and practice of Industrial & Employee relations in Jamaica, regionally and internationally. Students are required to critically examine the role of the actors, the processes and machinery that are integral to the employment relationship.
Conflict and conflict resolution theories and mechanisms are central themes in this course. Other themes, concepts and values are highlighted in the course are listed below however they are not limited to the following list:
- Fairness and equity
- Power and authority,
- Individualism and collectivism,
- Rights and responsibilities,
- Integrity and trust.
Contractual arrangements, their differences and legal implications in respect of breaches of these arrangements are examined. The course exposes students to Jamaican precedent setting cases in the practice of Industrial and Employee Relations which are compared to cases of a similar nature in the international arena.
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Evaluate theories pertaining to industrial relations and their impact on industrial relations policies and practices in Jamaica, the Caribbean and USA.
- Assess the role and importance of trade unions, in contemporary society.
- Evaluate the principles of collective bargaining and the negotiation process in the maintenance of industrial peace and harmony.
- Analyse and draft Grievance Policy and procedures document and discuss strategies for dispute resolution.
- Assess the impact of Jamaican Labour Legislation on the overall employee relations in the workplace and contracts of employment.
