UCC Single Module Certificate Course
This course focuses on the leadership function in business through applications and skill development. Students will learn leadership theory and concepts, improve their capability to apply the theory through critical thinking and develop leadership skills necessary for managerial positions in business enterprises.
The content is extended to include information on the identifiable stages that businesses
undergo, as they grow and develop. In many instances, the forces of change come from
within the business but external influences may also play a part in driving change.
To cope with changing conditions, many organizations require the input of creativity,
innovation and flexibility. This course will help students develop the skills for innovative practices in the business and to effect change and manage the change process with minimal disruption to the business.
On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Identify and understand traditional theories and concepts of leadership, as well as the most recently developed leadership philosophies.
- Apply leadership concepts through critical thinking.
- Enhance their ability to communicate their ideas clearly and persuasively, orally and in writing.
- Examine the impact of individual differences and situations in practicing the leadership function.
- Identify the strengths and weaknesses of a leader, manager and follower and develop the best approach to get things done.
- Explain the role of change in an organisation’s success.
- Develop the skills needed to support creativity, innovation and improvement.
- Develop the planning skills necessary to effect and manage change.
- Analyse and evaluate problems that can be encountered in the change process.
