Abnormal Psychology
UCC Single Module Certificate Course
This course is designed to introduce students to the principles and practices of abnormal psychology and how the competencies of the Consultant are developed. As the demands on well-being at the workplace grow, it is hoped that this course will be vital in preparing students to work in a range of social, educational, spiritual and medical environments. As students move through their programme of study, it becomes important for the building of critical, analytical and problem-solving skills within their specialization. This course is intended to build such competencies.
This course exposes students to the skills and strategies required for effectiveness in abnormal psychology. Topics include the history of abnormal psychology, dissociative disorders, stress, health issues, disorders, clinical work and legal and ethical issues in the profession.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Trace the history of the development of the study of abnormal psychology.
- Conduct consultation interviews
- Identify patient illnesses.
- Prescribe correct treatment for patient illnesses.
- Demonstrate patient care within the law and ethical standards
