Academic Writing I
UCC Single Module Certificate Course
This is a writing course focusing on expository writings. Basic editing principles are covered and applied to all writing. Selected essays are read and examined as examples of the expository styles to improve critical reading skills, grammar skills, and essay writing. As well, research techniques and documentation are emphasized as methods to enhance writing.
The course seeks to provide students with a systematic approach to academic writing. It aims to provide students with essential skills that will assist them in improving their writing competency, thus enhancing the quality of their academic output. Accordingly, this course seeks to encourage an interactive and supportive environment for the development of a writing community in which students can discuss their responses to assignments, discuss the results of their reading and research, and help fellow classmates improve drafts with suggestions for revision.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Understand the basic structures and practices in English required at the tertiary level.
- Develop the ability to analyze and correct their errors.
- Develop an awareness and appreciation for the language used in academic writing.
- Apply a variety of expository styles to writing.
- Write correctly structured college-level essays.
- Support ideas in writing using approved sources.
- Write a formal research paper using APA format.
On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Select an appropriate topic for a research paper
- Develop a thesis statement or purpose statement for the topic
- Collect information from sources to support the thesis or purpose statement.
- Prepare an outline for the paper.
- Incorporate summarized, paraphrased, and quoted information to support ideas
- Apply APA format to the paper for set up, in-text citations, and references.
- Revise, edit, and correct writing.
- Read, understand and follow instructions.
- Organize and conduct a research project by meeting deadlines and special requirements.
