This module is the first in a series of accounting modules that will prepare students to make appropriate managerial decisions based on financial information.
The students will be exposed to, and be able to define the business environment, business units as well as the concepts and methods of accounting. The students will also develop a basis for subsequent studies in accounting.
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- Identify and outline the structure and design of business organizations and the environment in which they operate.
- Describe and apply accounting principles and ethical practices in business operations relating to the fundamentals of accounting.
- Explain and apply the principles of entry level accounts: - The accounting equation, accrual concept, matching principles, steps in the accounting process; types of
accounts; balancing accounts and preparing the Trial Balance. - Utilise accounting information to prepare Income Statement and Statements of Financial Position (Trading and P & L Account/Capital Account/Balance
Sheet etc); perform adjustments; accounting for depreciation and doubtful debts. - Reconcile the Cash Book with bank balances and prepare bank reconciliation statements.
- Explain the principles of internal control systems including security of data and Compliance including fraud detection/prevention including money laundering.
This course is a non-credit course.
This course is open-entry. There are no prerequisites for entry.
