This course aims to provide a theoretical background for students to understand the basic principles of taxation in the Jamaican environment. In addition, students should be able to do basic tax computations for individuals, partnerships, and corporate bodies. After completing this course, the student should understand the tax law and practices as it relates to individuals and businesses, employees, and employers’ resident in Jamaica.
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- State and outline the principles in taxation theory.
- Outline the Jamaican tax structure.
- Describe the types of taxes applicable in Jamaica.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of taxation.
- Compute basic tax liability.
- Compute statutory deductions.
- Compute taxes on allowances and expenses.
- Explain and compute taxes for basic capital allowances.
- Compute taxation for income from other sources.
- Compute tax liability for sole traders and partnerships.
This course is open-entry. There are no prerequisites for entry.
