UCC to confer degrees on substantial number of graduates

Kingston, July 18, 2019 – Some 400 graduands will receive their Bachelors or Masters Degrees from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC), upon successfully completing their programmes of studies this year.

The degrees will be bestowed at the University’s Commencement Ceremony, being held under the theme: Moving Forward: Seize Every Opportunity – ‘Every step towards purpose creates opportunities for achievement’, on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the National Arena, beginning at 2:00 p.m. 

The University President and Executive Chancellor, Professor Dennis J. Gayle, commented, “UCC successfully set out to light a fire of curiosity for continuing learning within each graduand, while encouraging their desire to make a difference to national and regional economic growth and development, and to do well by doing good.”

The graduands studied various programmes including, the Commonwealth Executive Master of Business Administration, Commonwealth Executive Master of Public Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting, Financial Management, Information Systems Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Logistics and Operations Management or Tourism and Hospitality Management, among others.

The keynote address will be delivered by the Honourable Mrs. Dorothy Pine-McLarty, who will also be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration by the University President and Executive Chancellor.  Mrs. Pine-McLarty is a consultant at the law firm, Myers, Fletcher & Gordon, Chairman of the Electoral Office of Jamaica and a long-standing member of the oldest all-female service club in the island, Soroptimist International of Jamaica Kingston. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Access to Information Appeal Tribunal and the Jamaica National Group. She has also served on Boards of the Charities Evaluation Services Board of England and Wales, the Jamaica Basic Schools’ Foundation (United Kingdom) Limited, and was the Chancellor’s nominee to the Council of the University of Technology, Jamaica.

A major highlight at this year’s Commencement Ceremony will be the presentation of awards to the Kiwanis movement, the largest service organisation in Jamaica, which has contributed immensely to the underserved population in Jamaica. Both the Kiwanis Club of North St. Andrew and the Kiwanis Division 23 East will be presented with the UCC Humanitarian Leadership Award and the UCC Excellence in Community Service Award respectively.

UCC is the largest non-affiliated privately owned university in Jamaica. The institution is currently a University Council of Jamaica Candidate for Institutional Accreditation, having also achieved International Institutional Accreditation by the UK-based Accreditation Services for Independent Colleges and Universities (ASIC) in December 2016.
