UCC Announces the Strategic Resumption of Classes at All Regional Campuses

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Tuesday, November 11, 2025: The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) wishes to advise our staff, students, and stakeholders that classes, both online and in person, have recommenced in full effect.

Academic activities were temporarily suspended following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which affected campus operations and the well-being of several members of the university community.

On Monday, November 3, 2025, the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) reported connectivity challenges affecting internet and phone services. With these issues resolved and students eager to resume their studies, the University reinstated classes on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

“The decision was also influenced by students’ demonstrated resilience and determination to return to academic life. Many students expressed that the classroom experience has provided a sense of normalcy and motivation amid post-hurricane recovery” shared Professor Gyles, President of the University.

In an effort to facilitate a smooth re-transition into the classroom, UCC has conducted campus assessments to determine the structural readiness of the campus for face-to-face learning.

Additionally, the UCC Foundation (UCCF) has developed a hurricane relief programme which consists of donations to regional campuses to provide assistance to students who have lost all their belongings.  The relief packages containing non-perishable food, toiletries, articles of clothing and sanitary products were delivered to campus managers at the Montego Bay and Mandeville campuses on Tuesday, November 4 and Friday, November 9, respectively. This donation is expected to continue to other regional campuses through a phased approach.

Students in Kingston and nearby parishes who reported adverse impacts to their livelihoods and property also received aid from the UCCF.

Acknowledging the psychological effects of the hurricane, UCC has introduced weekly counseling sessions led by the university chaplain, offered both online and in person. This initiative is designed to support students’ emotional restoration and overall well-being as they reintegrate into their academic routines.
