DAY 1 - KEYNOTE SPEAKER PROFILE

Hon. Fayval Williams, MP
Minister of Energy, Science and Technology

Mrs. Williams is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) by profession. She has an MBA with concentration in Finance from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA (cum laude) in Economics from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Mrs. Williams was elected Member of Parliament for St. Andrew Eastern in the recent general election and was the former Executive Director of Kingston Properties Limited.

Prior to Kingston Properties, Mrs. Williams served as Chief Investment Officer of JMMB Limited from March, 2005 to September, 2007 with investment responsibilities spanning the trading department, investment research, and pensions. Also, during the period September 2002 to February 2004, Mrs. Williams consulted with JMMB in the areas of market risk management and investment research where she led that company’s efforts to develop investment research capabilities. Mrs. Williams also served as the Head of the Valuation and Pricing team for JMMB’s public offering.

In 2004, Mrs. Williams consulted with the Financial Services Commission (FSC) in the area of Research and Policy. Prior to returning to Jamaica, Mrs. Williams was Senior Vice President at Putnam Investments, in Boston, a top-10-global mutual fund manager. Her investment work spanned a broad cross-section of industries. She also had portfolio management responsibilities for an equity portfolio product and led Putnam’s efforts to incubate a market neutral hedge fund.

Mrs. William’s investment experience also includes approximately five years as Vice President at Wellington Management Company in Boston, Massachusetts. Her focus was on fixed income securities investments. Prior to Wellington, she was a Fixed Income Analyst at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and shared portfolio management responsibilities for a US$3 billion portfolio. She was a member of the team that provided macro-economic and market input for both the strategic and tactical portfolio decisions.

Mrs. Williams also gained experience at the Equitable Real Estate Investment Management in Chicago, Illinois. While there, she performed valuation analysis on commercial real estate properties. She also worked as an Information Systems Analyst for Morgan Stanley an American multinational financial services corporation that provides securities products and services to customers, including corporations, governments, financial institutions, and individuals.


DAY 2 - KEYNOTE SPEAKER PROFILE

Dr. The Honourable Nigel Clarke
Minister of Finance and the Public Service

Dr. the Honourable Nigel Clarke is Minister of Finance and the Public Service and Member of Parliament for St Andrew North Western.

A businessman and financier by background, Minister Clarke is formerly Deputy Chairman of the Musson Group, a regional conglomerate, Deputy Chairman of the PBS Group, a publicly traded regional technology company and Chairman of Eppley Limited, a publicly traded asset management company. Over the course of his private sector career Dr. Clarke led and executed several significant financing and corporate transactions throughout the region.

Minister Clarke also served over different periods as a Senator in the Upper House of Parliament, as Chairman of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Chairman of the National Housing Trust, Chairman of the HEART Trust , a Director on the Board of the Central Bank and was the founding Chairman of an NGO that uses music as a tool of social change.

 


DAY 2 - KEY PRESENTATION SPEAKER PROFILE

Professor the Honourable Anthony Chen
Professor Emeritus, Department of Physics, University of the West Indies

A. Anthony Chen is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica.

He holds a B.Sc. degree in Physics and Mathematics from Boston College; a M.A. in Teaching from Harvard University; a M. Sc. in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics from the University of the West Indies.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.  His research interest includes Atmospheric Physics and Meteorology, Environmental and Energy Studies and Physics Education.  He has been the Principal Investigator/Co-Principal Investigator for several funded projects.

He has published works in books, journal articles, conference papers and reports to government and industry. His refereed publication lists over 30 titles and he served as the Lead author for the Small Island Section of Chapter 11 (Regional Projections) of Working Group I publication (Climate Change 2007, The Physical Science Basis) for Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th Assessment, when IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. 

Though retired, he still teaches part-time and works on projects in climate change and energy.  He is an advocate of climate change mitigation and renewable energy for small islands.

He was the Principal Investigator in producing the first solar radiation map and the first wind map of Jamaica based on in-situ measurements, and in evaluating the performance of the first large scale wind turbine at Munro College in Jamaica.  He was the course Principal for several short courses in renewable energy, and taught courses in renewable energy for final year students at UWI.
