What Laptop and Internet Do You Need for Online University at UCC?
Before buying a laptop or choosing a data plan, compare UCC’s published guidance with the specific requirements of your programme and courses.

Before spending money on a laptop or data plan, compare what UCC publishes with what your particular course requires. The Student Handbook linked on UCC’s website gives general online-learning guidance. A course using specialist software can demand more, so read its course information before choosing a device.

What Does UCC’s Published Guidance Say?

The UCC Student Handbook lists general technology guidance for online learning.

Browser
Latest version of Google Chrome
Operating System
Windows 11 or macOS 11+
Memory
8 GB RAM
Processor
Eight-core CPU
Audio and Video
Audio and video input/output
Office Software
Microsoft Office 2016 or later
Download Speed
10–25 Mbps
Upload Speed
At least 5 Mbps

The handbook also says pop-ups must be allowed for Adobe Connect and Moodle.

Important
These are published general guidelines. Do not assume that a specialised programme has identical requirements. Always check your programme and course information.
What Should You Look for in a Laptop?

For research, documents, browser tabs and video classes, prioritise a device that is practical and reliable for everyday study.

Reliable webcam
Clear microphone
Comfortable keyboard
Useful battery life
A device you can maintain

As general buying advice, 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB or 512 GB SSD offer more room for multitasking and files.

The 16 GB RAM and storage figures above are general buying advice, not stated here as UCC requirements. If a course names specialist software, use its stated compatibility and hardware guidance.

Test Your Connection Where You Will Actually Study

A speed test is more useful when you run it in the place and at the time you normally expect to study.

Run a speed test in your usual study location.
Test the connection at the time you expect to attend classes.
Try a video call.
Test a sample file upload.
Check your data allowance.
Know how you will switch to a backup connection or location.

Download permitted materials when your connection is stable. In Jamaica, a plan for an outage matters as much as a good speed-test result on one day.

Set Up the UCC Platforms Before You Need Them

The Student Handbook refers to Moodle for coursework and Aeorion for student administration and registration.

UCC Online is an institutional starting point for online study.

Follow official account instructions.
Save the correct login pages.
Keep your password private.
Test access before a deadline, not during an assessment.
A Pre-Semester Technology Checklist

Before classes begin, work through these checks:

☐ Read your programme and course information for required software and assessments.
☐ Compare your computer, browser, camera and microphone with the published Student Handbook guidance.
☐ Test download, upload, a video call and file submission from your normal study location.
☐ Sign in to the UCC systems you have been instructed to use and save official support links.
☐ Create course folders, a second copy of important files and a clear filename convention.
☐ Keep a backup connection or study location in mind and charge your device before timed work.
If Something Goes Wrong

If something fails, note the error message, the device you were using and the steps that produced the problem. That information can make it easier for support staff to understand what happened.

Test Your Setup Before the Semester Gets Busy

A workable setup is one you have tested in the conditions in which you will study. That preparation saves more stress than buying extra specifications you may not need.
