Institutional Accreditation

University Council of Jamaica (UCJ)

The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is institutionally accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ), Jamaica's national accrediting body, with effect from November 11, 2019. Institutional accreditation is the status granted by UCJ to an institution that has been found to meet established standards for educational quality.

Registration as a University

Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (JTEC)

UCC is registered by the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (JTEC) as a Teaching University, with effect from July 20, 2022.

Recognition of University Status

ASIC (Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges, and Universities)

Since October 2016, UCC has held International Institutional Accreditation from ASIC with Premier Status for its commendable Areas of Operation.

ASIC accreditation is a globally recognised quality standard in international education. Institutions undergo independent external assessment across administration, governance, and educational provision. Achieving ASIC accreditation demonstrates UCC's commitment to high-quality student experiences and continuous improvement.

University of London Teaching Centre

University of London (UOL)

UCC is the only institution in Jamaica registered with and recognised by the University of London as a Teaching Centre to offer the Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law and the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programmes in Jamaica.

Significance

  • ✓ Recognition for the Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law (Certificate Teaching Status) since 2009.
  • ✓ Successful completion of the CertHE enables eligible students to matriculate into Year 2 of the UOL LLB.

CCCJ / NCTVET Skills Proficiency & Occupational Associate Degrees

Council of Community Colleges Jamaica (CCCJ) / Ministry of Education

UCC has an MOU with the Ministry of Education to offer the National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) Skills Proficiency Certificate and participates in CCCJ's scheduled compliance audit process. UCC offers CCCJ Occupational Associate Degrees (OADs).

ACCA Programme Exemption Accreditation

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

UCC has held ACCA Programme Exemption Accreditation since January 2017. This accreditation was renewed for another five years, certifying applicable programmes for graduates from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026.

City & Guilds certification is endorsed for specific matriculation purposes (including acceptance of Stage 3 Math and English for entry to certain programmes). Certifications are issued by City & Guilds and, where applicable, HEART/NSTA Trust.

Data Protection Act – Registered Data Controller

UCC is registered as a data controller under Jamaica's Data Protection framework (registration year as at 2023/2024).

Annual Surveys

JTEC Annual Survey of Tertiary Institutions

UCC participates in the JTEC Annual Survey of Tertiary Institutions, which supports national reporting and planning, including inputs to Jamaica's Economic and Social Survey of Jamaica (ESSJ).
