UCC makes history with female football debut as four teams prepare for Intercol Semester 1 competition

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Tuesday, October 6, 2026: The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is gearing up for the start of the Intercol Semester 1 season on Thursday, October 8, 2026, with its male football, netball and basketball teams returning to competition—and, for the first time in the University’s history, a female football team joining the lineup.
The landmark entry marks an exciting step in the development of UCC’s Sports Programme, expanding opportunities for female student-athletes and giving more students the chance to represent their University through sport.
David Tulloch, Director of Student Services and Head Coach of both football teams, has expressed gratitude for the strong turnout for sporting activities this semester. He views the enthusiasm as an encouraging sign of students’ desire to participate, develop their talents and contribute to university life.
Tulloch enters the season with high expectations for all four teams, placing emphasis on preparation, discipline, teamwork and pride in representing UCC. For the inaugural female football squad, the opportunity carries particular significance: its players will help establish a foundation for those who follow.
Supporting Tulloch is Assistant Coach Zavier Crockshan, who also coaches the UCC staff football team. Now a registered student at the University, Crockshan brings an additional dimension to his involvement as a player, combining coaching responsibilities with firsthand experience of the demands of student-athlete life.
UCC’s netball team continues under the leadership of Coach Keino Johnson. The basketball team is led by Coach Roger Marshall, as its players prepare for the season.
Together, the coaching team supports a programme that connects sporting ambition with student development. Through training and competition, students have opportunities to strengthen their leadership, resilience, time management and ability to work towards shared goals—qualities that serve them in the classroom and beyond.
The strong turnout this semester also reinforces the role of sport in building a connected university community. Whether students are competing, attending matches or encouraging their peers, their involvement helps create a sense of belonging and shared UCC pride.
As the season begins, students, staff, alumni and supporters are encouraged to rally behind the teams. Every voice of encouragement matters as UCC’s student-athletes take their place on the field and court.
UCC’s male football, netball and basketball teams begin competition on October 8. The inaugural female football team’s first fixture is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, against GCF at 3 p.m. at GCF.
