The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of:

DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

SUMMARY

The Database Administrator will see to the performance, integrity and security of the database. The Database Administrator will be involved in the planning and development of the database, as well as troubleshooting any issues on behalf of the users to ensure data remains consistent across the database. He/ She will make provision for data security and recovery control (ensuring all data is retrievable in an emergency) as well as to ensuring data is clearly defined to allow users to access data concurrently, in a form that suits their needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES (includes but not limited to)

  • Establish the needs of users and monitoring user access and security
  • Monitor performance and manage parameters in order to provide fast responses to front-end users
  • Map out the conceptual design for a planned database
  • Consider both back-end organisation of data and front-end accessibility for end-users
  • Refine the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model
  • Responsibility for maintaining the integrity and performance of company databases
  • Must guarantee that data is stored securely and optimally
  • Informing end users of changes in databases and train them to utilize systems.
  • Further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements
  • Install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS)
  • Maintain data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act
  • Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
  • Control access permissions and privileges
  • Develop, manage and test back-up and recovery plans
  • Ensure that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly
  • Carry out capacity planning
  • Work closely with IT project managers, database programmers and multimedia programmers
  • Communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
  • Commission and install new applications and customise existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose
  • Manage the security and disaster recovery aspects of a database.

  • Business awareness and understanding of business requirements of IT
  • A willingness to keep up to date with developments in new technology
  • A commitment to continuing professional development (CPD)
  • An understanding of information legislation, such as the Data Protection Act.

Database Administrator Qualifications/Skills:

  • Strong command of SQL and SQL server tools
  • Advanced knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards
  • Understanding of relational and dimensional data modelling
  • PowerShell and Unix shell scripting skills
  • Familiarity with SSAS, SSIS, SSRS
  • Strong mathematical and statistical knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Impeccable attention to detail

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • An Associate Degree in Computer Science or a related field a Bachelor’s Degree would be an asset.
  • Two years of experience in database administration, information technology, database architecture, or a related field
  • MCSE/MCSA certifications preferred
  • Experience with Linux and Windows Server environments
  • Extensive experience with database technologies (MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL Oracle, MongoDB)
  • Experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure) a plus
