Programme Overview
Florida International University (FIU) offers through the facilitation of the University College of the Caribbean (UCC), the Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction for teachers and education professionals. The degree programme involves advanced study designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers and curriculum specialists. The programme facilitates the development of skills at all levels of the education system including primary, junior high, and high schools. Teachers at the tertiary level also benefit from exposure to the programme.
The programme offers students the opportunity to explore the ways in which knowledge and skills developed in the programmes enhance the general teaching-learning experience.
The faculty for the programme includes persons who are full time at the Miami, Florida campus of the FIU. Local lecturers and tutors are also utilized where appropriate.
Entry Requirements
- Applicants must hold or qualify for professional teacher certification. All applicants must also satisfy the FIU College of Education Board of Admission requirements.
- Applicants must hold a bachelors degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate study.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- A candidate for admission to the programme will be judged not only on the basis of quantitative criteria but also in relation to prior experience, and how this relates to future career goals.
Application Procedure
The application process has to start with an Online Application. Individuals interested in applying for admission to the programme should comply with the following:
- Go to http://www.fiu.edu/gradadm/instructions_apply_online.htm and follow application instructions.
- Official Transcript(s) from the educational institution(s) where you earned your Bachelor’s Degree should be sent in a sealed envelope and addressed as follows:

- Arrange for two (2) letters of recommendation to support your application to be submitted to the UCC secretariat in sealed envelopes.
- Write a brief Essay/Statement of personal educational philosophy and professional goals.
- A non-refundable US$30 application fee (via Credit Card payment online at FIU website) or US$ draft made payable to Florida International University.
Programme Schedule
- Duration: 15 months.
- Saturdays 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. & Sundays 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Textbooks and Materials
All prescribed textbooks and required materials will be provided by UCC and the Florida International University.
Tuition Fees
The current overall programme fee is US$13,600 (subject to change). A non-refundable deposit of US$800.00 is required upon formal acceptance to the programme. Tuition and fees are due at the beginning of each module as per the Payment Contract a student signs upon admission to the programme. Tuition and fees cover textbooks/materials, access to FIU online library, full internet access and core expenses (Hotel, airfare and transportation) for the five-day mandatory field trip to Miami. Fees are subject to change at short notice. Participants who leave the programme do not receive a refund.
Student Loans
Applicants may apply for a student’s loan through any of the following institutions:

• Ministry of Finance (Government workers only)
Transfer of Credit
Students may transfer no more than 6 hours for their Master’s Degree programme. All transfer credits must be applied for and approval is granted by the FIU College of Education.
