A.Sc Management Information Systems


Duration
2 ¼ years Year Part Time – 18 months Full Time

Course Objectives
Management Information Systems and Computer Technology will continue to play a significant role in management planning. Electronic information processing allows management to use sophisticated analysis, forecasting and simulation techniques as a basis for long range and day-to-day decision making

Participants will be exposed to writing, compiling, debugging and running (in structured Visual Basic and C), business applications programmes covering such topics as inventory, payroll and sales analysis. In addition, students will gain competence in the use of computer application packages for electronic spreadsheet, data management, word processing and multimedia authoring. Concepts in telecommunications and networking, as well as the use of the internet, are incorporated into the overall degree programme.

Faculty

  • Instructions will be provided by an eminent and highly qualified team of local faculty and other professionals. Overseas/international guest lecturers will be utilised where appropriate

This degree programme is specially designed for persons:

  • Who want to specialize in computing or in an academic specialization
  • It provides the foundation for the most widely used applications in industry today
  • Persons seeking the skills to make a career switch or those seeking academic advancement in order to pursue a bachelor degree programme.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the UCC Associate Degree programmes, candidates must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

  • Minimum 5 GCE O’Level or CXC subjects with passes at A, B or C / 1 or 2 (including English Language and Mathematics). Participants with CXC passes at level 3 since 1998 (or in place of a CXC or GCE pass in Math, possess a pass in UWI EC080 Remedial Mathematics) are also eligible. Participants without the required pass in a numerate subject must register to attend O’Level/CXC Math classes as a co-requisite
  • Other qualifications that may be considered by the Admissions Department as equivalent
  • Relevant experience in a managerial position will usually be considered in addition to the above

Textbooks and Materials

Each registered student is required to have a laptop in keeping with prescribed specifications. Wide Area Networks and direct access to the internet will allow students to simultaneously utilise common computer services. The hardware and software environment experienced by students will be representative of the current generation of personal computers capable of handling modern business applications.

Class Structure

  • Part-Time: Early Bird (Mornings), Evenings or Sundays.
